Wilde, Oscar

The picture of Dorian Gray / Oscar Wilde ; edited with an introduction and notes by Joseph Bristow

New ed.

Oxford ; New York : Oxford university press, 2006

Oxford world's classics

Abstract: Since its first publication in 1890, Oscar Wilde's only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, has remained the subject of critical controversy. Acclaimed by some as an instructive moral tale, it has been denounced by others for its implicit immorality. After having his portrait painted, Dorian Gray is captivated by his own beauty. Tempted by his world-weary friend, decadent friend Lord Henry Wotton, he wished to stay young forever and pledges his very soul to keep his good looks. As Dorian's slide into crime and cruelty progresses, he stays magically youthful, while his beautiful portrait changes, revealing the hideous corruption of moral decay. Set in fin-de-siécle London, the novel traces a path from the studio of painter Basil Howard to the opium dens of the East End. The text of this edition is derived from the Oxford English Texts, which prints acritically established version of the first book edition of 1891. Also included is a new, fuller introduction, which considers the difference between the 1890 and 1891 texts, Wilde's range of sources, significant critical approaches to the novel and its reputation since 1891, full explanatory notes that identify Wilde's sources, and an up-to-date-bibliography

Abstract: Douglas likes women, quiet women...the kind he deals with at the mortuary where he works. Douglas meets marjorie, who's unemployed, gaining wight and losing confidence. She laughs a lot to cover up her shyness, but Douglas whishes she wouldn't. It's so much more exciting when girls are still. Perfectly still.

Laurel for Libby : a tale with cuts / by the author Vivien Greene

Bodleian Library, 2006

Abstract: This tale was preserved in an unpublished manuscript by Vivien Greene, the wife of Graham Greene, and based on a dream she had on September 14, 1937. It tells the story of "The oldest cat in Bristol" who was born in the summer of 1862 and lived through four major wars, the peace of Berlin and the treaty of Versailles. The whimsical story of this richly-marked tabby with a silvery muzzle and a tendency to dribble was presented by the author to her husband as a gift on their 10th wedding anniversary. The story is printed in the authors own hand and illustrated with charming woodcuts of Libby herself

The devil wears Prada / Lauren Weisberger

London : Harper, 2006

Abstract: Andrea Sachs, a small-town girl fresh out of college, lands the job “a million girls would die for.” Hired as the assistant to Miranda Priestly, the high-profile, fabulously successful editor of Runway magazine, Andrea finds herself in an office that shouts Prada! Armani! Versace! at every turn, a world populated by impossibly thin, heart-wrenchingly stylish women and beautiful men clad in fine-ribbed turtlenecks and tight leather pants that show off their lifelong dedication to the gym. With breathtaking ease, Miranda can turn each and every one of these hip sophisticates into a scared, whimpering child.

Abstract: When she was ten, Mary Miller was pushed into the hot burn--a torrent of warm-chemical run-off from the local coal mine. Her hair turned white and she was subsequently regarded with a mixture of fear and fascination by her God-fearing community. Years later she is a single mother and is having a faltering affair. Her son Sandy has fallen in love with a homeless girl, but the search for happiness isn't easy, and both mother and son are gradually being forced to come to terms with a dark secret from Mary's childhood.
