History of the Venetian Dukes (1102-1229) : with an appendix of brief venetian historical texts / edition and translation by Luigi Andrea Berto

Medioevo e Rinascimento. Testi

Abstract: The 12. and early 13. centuries were a crucial period for the emergence of Venice as one of the major powers in the Mediterranean. Taking advantage of the conquest of the Holy Land and the weakening of Byzantine naval power, the Venetians’ policy in the eastern Mediterranean aimed both at strengthening their position in that area and acquiring new markets. In order to do so, they demonstrated their readiness to use force. For the first time in their history, the Venetians went to the eastern Mediterranean not only for trading but also for fighting, becoming involved in the Crusades and establishing a relationship with the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem after the First Crusade. The goal of this volume is to present the edition of the Latin text and the English translation of the Historia ducum Venetorum (History of the Venetian Dukes) which describes this period. It is the first Venetian historical text composed after the Fourth Crusade, and it is also the only extant chronicle composed in Venice after the beginning of the eleventh century. In this volume the edition and translation of the Historia ducum Venetorum is accompanied by other two historical texts: the Brief Venetians Annals and the Account of the Election of Dominic Silvo as Duke of the Venetians by Dominic Tino.

Abstract: In the year 1244/45, the first Latin translation of the Talmud was completed in Paris. This translation, which is known as the 'Extractiones de Talmud', is extant in two versions. While the first version, edited in CC CM 291 (2018), offers an apparently unbiased presentation of the Talmudic passages following the sequence of the Talmudic treatises, the second one, which may be called the thematic Talmud translation, organizes these texts along with other materials according to thirteen chapters. The titles of these chapters clearly betray the polemic intention of the thematic translation, namely: On the authority of the Talmud and its praise; On the sages and teachers of the Talmud; On the blasphemies against Christ and the Holy Virgin; On blasphemies against God; On what is said against the Christians; On errors and heresies; On sorcery; On dreams; On the world to come; On the Messiah; On stupidities; On immoral and impure things; On fables. It was this second version, which also incorporated additional materials from other Jewish sources, that led to the final condemnation of the Talmud in Paris in the year 1248.

Abstract: The present volume provides the first critical edition of the sermons of Peter Abelard gathered by the author on behalf of the nuns of the Paraclete, as Abelard’s dedicatory letter to Heloise makes clear. The collection contains 35 sermons 33 of which were edited 1616 by François d’Amboise and André Duchesne. Unfortunately the manuscript kept at the Sorbonne, used for the editio princeps, has disappeared. Only 6 out of the 33 sermons have survived, in three recently discovered manuscripts. A supplementary sermon (s. 34) of the same collection and a fragment of an extra sermon (against the Cistercians) turned up respectively in one of those manuscripts. Modern scholars have provided editions of the eight sermons that survived in the manuscripts. Well acquainted with Peter Abelard’s writings skills and style, the editor investigated and compared the six sermons of the editio princeps that are also present in the manuscripts. After this profound research, he took the immense job of re-editing the entire collection. Where necessary he intervened on the basis of his knowledge of the language and ideas of Abelard.

Abstract: Critical edition of a Latin grammar from Charlemagne's court circle. Peter of Pisa was among the scholars invited by Charlemagne to his court in the late 780s, and, according to Einhard, Charlemagne’s biographer, he taught grammar to the Emperor himself. The present book offers a critical edition of the textbook on grammar that Peter composed while teaching in the palatine school. It has survived in three versions, which enable us to see, how Peter’s ideas on language pedagogy developed, when new grammatical works and methods of teaching became accessible to scholars in the court circle. Grammatical education was at the heart of the Carolingian reform of learning, which owed many of its crucial features to Alcuin of York. His teaching of the Liberal Arts assigned major importance to the use of dialectic in all intellectual inquiry, including the study of grammar. This new approach to grammar, which is first attested in the works of Peter of Pisa and Alcuin, affected not only the advanced study of grammar but even secondary level pedagogy. Interaction between grammar and logic became standard practice with the subsequent generations of grammarians, establishing itself as a permanent feature of medieval culture from the eleventh century onwards. It is to this intellectual context that Peter's manual on grammar is related in the present book.

Abstract: Prepared in Paris in 1244/45, the "Extractiones de Talmud" offer the first substantial translation of hundreds of Talmudic passages from Hebrew and Aramaic into Latin. Prepared in Paris in 1244/45, this work offer the first substantial translation of hundreds of Talmudic passages from Hebrew and Aramaic into Latin. In 1239 Pope Gregory IX wrote to kings and bishops across Europe, urging them to seize and examine the manuscripts of the Talmud in their dominions. As a result, a process against the Talmud took place in Paris in 1240. Though the Talmud went up in flames at the Place de la Grève in 1241/42, the controversy on the Talmud continued over the following years, since Gregory’s successor, Pope Innocent IV, called for a revision of its condemnation. At the centre of this revision are the Extractiones de Talmud, a translation of hundreds of Talmudic passages prepared during the years 1244/45 for Odo of Châteauroux, Legate of the Apostolic See, that served as the basis of his final condemnation of the Talmud in May 1248. This is the first edition of the Latin Talmud, which is a milestone in the long history of Christian-Jewish intellectual encounters.

Abstract: This volume presents a semi-critical edition of the collection of model by the French Franciscan Nicolaus de Aquaevilla, who lived in the late thirteenth century. It contains sixty sermons for ordinary Sundays and for the great Christological feasts. Collections of model sermons entail specific editorial problems due to their large size and fluid character as well as the high number of textual witnesses. Adopting a pragmatic method, this edition publishes one influential version on the basis of an incunable (printed shortly before 1480), while variants from three manuscripts are recorded in the critical apparatus.
